Is attending the tryout mandatory to play in KYB’s 5 on 5 league?
Tryouts are NOT mandatory to play in KYB’s 5 on 5 League. Tryouts are only required for those players who wish to try out for the more competitive “Draft” divisions within their grades. All boys and girls in grades 3rd-6th may tryout and KYB encourages all interested players to attend the tryout. Players who do not try out, as well as players who try out but are not drafted, will be automatically placed on a non-draft team.
When and where are the tryouts for the Draft divisions?
There are two draft date tryout options: Friday, October 18, 2024 from 6:00 pm to 9:00pm OR Saturday, October 19, 2023, from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm. Players only have to attend one of the tryout option to be "draft eligible".
What are the Draft divisions?
The Draft divisions offer players the opportunity to be chosen to play at a higher competitive level within their grade-based divisions. KYB offers six Draft divisions: 3rd Grade Boys; 4th Grade Boys; 5th Grade Boys; 6th Grade Boys, 3rd/4th Grade Girls and 5th/6th Grade Girls.
The result of a successful draft is that the better players in each of those grade divisions will have the chance to compete against one another. The non-draft divisions should, therefore, become less subject to the potential disruption of having a player with clearly superior skills dominate the division.
Are there any other tryout dates?
No. The dates above are the only day that tryouts will be held. There are no tryout makeup dates.
What if my child cannot attend the tryout due to a previous commitment?
If your child cannot attend the tryout but would like to be considered for a Draft division, please contact the Player Agent responsible for your child’s division (see the “Contact Us” tab on the KYB website) and inform them that you would like your child to be placed on the Draft Board.
This communication must take place prior to or during the tryout sessions. Players on the Draft Board must be selected by the end of the 5th round of the draft. If a player on the Draft Board is not selected by the end of the 5th round, they are not permitted to play in the Draft division and they will be placed on a non-draft team.
If my child is drafted, can I decline to play in the Draft division?
Any player attending tryouts or being declared Draft Board eligible by their parent/guardian must play for the team that drafts him/her. Drafted players who decline to play for the team that drafts them will NOT be allowed to play for a non-draft team.
How long does the tryout take?
The actual tryout should take approximately 20-30 minutes. The time to wait in line to try out can vary and will depend on the number of players who choose to try out at that particular time.
What does the tryout involve?
Selection for the Draft divisions will be done by our designated Draft coaches. These coaches will have the opportunity to evaluate the players based on a short demonstration of their skills. We have established a routine, consisting of basic basketball skills that all players will be asked to complete. Coaches will evaluate the individual performers and make their selection in our draft, which will take place on the day immediately following tryouts.
May I watch my child’s tryout?
No. Parents/guardians are not permitted to be in the school and gym during the tryout.
How many Draft teams are there in each grade?
Draft divisions typically have between four and eight teams. The number of teams depends upon a number of factors, including the number and skill level of the players attending the tryout.
When will I be notified if my child was selected in the draft?
Players who are drafted should be notified by their coach by Tuesday, October 22, 2024. Only players who are drafted will be notified of their placement on a draft team. Players who do not hear from a coach by Tuesday, October 22, 2024, should assume that they were not selected in the draft. Players who are not selected in the draft will be automatically placed on a non-draft team. No further action is required by parents for this to happen.
Are there any other eligibility requirements for the tryout?
The player must be registered to play in 5-on-5 through KYB’s online registration system and have paid their registration fee in order to be eligible for the tryout.
All players will need to have registered prior to attending tryouts.
